What is a UPI PIN?
Your UPI PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a 4-6 digit code that authorises UPI transactions from your bank account. It is set by you and known only to you — not even your bank knows it.
How to Create a Strong PIN
- Avoid obvious patterns: 1234, 0000, 1111, your birth year
- Don't use the same PIN as your ATM card
- Use a combination that isn't personally meaningful (avoid anniversary dates, etc.)
- Change your PIN every 3-6 months
Absolute rule: Never share your UPI PIN with anyone. Ever. For any reason. No bank, no payment company, no government agency needs your PIN.
How to Change Your UPI PIN
- Open your UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, etc.)
- Go to Profile → Bank Accounts → Change UPI PIN
- You'll need your debit card's last 6 digits and expiry date to reset
- An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification
If you forget your PIN: Use the "Forgot PIN" option in your UPI app. You'll reset it using your debit card details — you don't need to visit a bank.
When Is Your PIN Asked For?
Only when YOU initiate a payment. If you see a PIN prompt when trying to receive money or when someone else has asked you to approve something — abort immediately and report it.
