Understanding UPI Security

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is one of the world's most secure payment systems — but scammers have found ways to exploit human behaviour, not the technology itself. Your PIN and your judgment are your most important defenses.

Golden Rule: You only enter your UPI PIN when SENDING money. If someone asks you to enter your PIN to RECEIVE money, it's a scam. There is no such thing as a "receive PIN."

Common UPI Scams

1. Collect Request Scam

A scammer sends a UPI collect request with a message like "₹10,000 cashback — just approve." When you enter your PIN, money is sent TO them, not received.

2. Screenshot/QR Code Scam

Scammer sends a QR code claiming it's for receiving payment. Scanning and approving it actually debits your account.

3. Customer Care Fraud

You search "PhonePe customer care number" and call a fake number. They ask you to share your UPI ID or install an app to "fix your issue."

4. OLX/Marketplace Scam

A fake "army officer" or buyer overpays and asks you to return the extra — then the original payment bounces while yours goes through.

Never share: Your UPI PIN, OTP, registered mobile number, or Aadhaar linked to your bank with anyone — including people claiming to be from payment apps.

Safe UPI Practices

  • Always verify the recipient's name before confirming a payment
  • Use UPI apps only from official app stores
  • Set a transaction limit in your UPI app settings
  • Enable app lock/biometric on your UPI app
  • Regularly check linked bank accounts and remove old ones
  • Report suspicious UPI IDs via the "Report" option in your app
